Quad Cities, IA/IL – Another round of dangerously cold conditions is expected across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois tonight and again Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office.

Forecasters warn that wind chills between 10° and 20° below zero are likely to redevelop in parts of the region, posing a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed for extended periods.

❄️ What to Expect

A reinforcing shot of Arctic air combined with light to moderate winds will drive apparent temperatures sharply lower after sunset. The coldest wind chills are expected late tonight through early Monday morning, especially in open and rural areas.

Cities included in the dangerous wind chill zone include:

  • Burlington
  • Cedar Rapids
  • Davenport
  • Dubuque
  • Moline
  • Clinton
  • Iowa City
  • Freeport
  • Sterling

In many of these locations, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes on exposed skin.

🚨 Cold Safety Reminders

The National Weather Service urges residents to take precautions:

  • Stay indoors if possible
  • Bring pets inside
  • Cover exposed skin when outdoors
  • Limit time outside
  • Check on elderly neighbors and family
  • Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are working if using supplemental heat

Road conditions may also remain slick as extreme cold limits the effectiveness of road treatments.

🌡️ Looking Ahead

While temperatures are expected to slowly moderate early in the workweek, tonight and Sunday night remain the most dangerous periods of this cold stretch. Residents should remain weather-aware and continue winter safety practices until the Arctic air fully retreats.
