Portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi remain under Cold Weather Advisories as very cold wind chills continue to pose health risks through Tuesday morning, with another cold period expected early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, wind chills ranging from 15 to 25 degrees are expected across a broad area of southeast Louisiana, including Baton Rouge, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, East and West Feliciana, and Washington parishes, as well as southern Mississippi counties such as Amite, Pike, Walthall, Wilkinson, Pearl River, and Hancock. This advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST Tuesday.
Additional Cold Weather Advisories have also been issued for southeast St. Tammany Parish and coastal Mississippi counties, including Harrison, Jackson, and Hancock, from midnight Tuesday night through 9 a.m. CST Wednesday. During this period, wind chills are expected to fall to around 25 degrees.
These conditions increase the risk of hypothermia with prolonged exposure, especially for young children, older adults, outdoor workers, and individuals without adequate shelter. Even brief exposure during the coldest hours may be hazardous without proper clothing.
Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear warm layered clothing, including hats and gloves, and check on elderly neighbors, family members, and those without reliable heating. Officials also caution against improper heater use and remind residents not to operate generators or grills indoors.
Temperatures are expected to moderate later Wednesday morning, but residents should continue monitoring forecasts as cold conditions persist across the region.
