Grand Forks, N.D. — Strong winds and dangerously cold temperatures are expected across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota today into tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.
In a forecast update issued Sunday, January 18, 2026, meteorologists highlighted maximum wind gusts peaking from mid-morning through the late afternoon, with several locations forecast to see gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour. The strongest winds are expected across much of the Red River Valley and surrounding areas.
As winds gradually diminish this evening, temperatures will fall sharply below zero, leading to wind chill values ranging from minus 25 to minus 40 degrees overnight. Forecast graphics show the coldest wind chills expected late tonight into early Monday morning.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect tonight for all areas, as the combination of falling temperatures and persistent winds will create hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the forecast closely and take precautions during periods of extreme cold.
