Sioux Falls, SD – The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has continued a Winter Storm Watch for much of southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa, and northeast Nebraska, effective from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, December 9–10, 2025.

Forecasters warn of potential blizzard conditions, with wind gusts of 55 to 60 mph expected to combine with light snow and blowing snow to produce whiteout visibility at times.

Even though snow accumulations will remain light, possibly up to one inch, the strong winds are expected to cause drifting and severely reduced visibility, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening late Tuesday through Wednesday morning.

The strongest winds will occur Tuesday evening through early Wednesday, with gusts over 50 mph expected across open country and higher terrain. Ice accumulations of a light glaze may also occur in parts of south-central South Dakota and southwest Minnesota, further worsening travel conditions.

Hazardous conditions could impact both the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes, with potential for downed trees and power lines due to the strength of the wind.

Residents and travelers should prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor forecast updates for possible Blizzard Warnings to be issued later.
