Dixon, Illinois – Heavy snow will return to northeast Illinois by Monday afternoon, setting up a hazardous evening commute and dangerous driving conditions that could persist into Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a fast-moving winter system will drop moderate to heavy snow beginning around 3 p.m. Monday, with rates reaching up to 2 inches per hour in some areas. Interstates I-55, I-80, I-88, and I-290 are expected to be among the hardest hit, especially during the evening rush.

Snowfall will mainly impact communities along and north of I-80, including Joliet, Naperville, Oak Lawn, and Chicago’s western and southern suburbs. Roadways may become quickly covered, and blowing snow could reduce visibility even further during peak commute times.

Conditions are expected to improve slowly by midday Tuesday, but temperatures remaining below freezing could lead to black ice on untreated roads and bridges through Wednesday morning.

Officials urge drivers to stay home if possible, monitor 511 traffic updates, and avoid passing snowplows. With additional advisories likely, residents are encouraged to check for school delays and changing road conditions overnight.
