Michigan City, Ind. – Dangerous swimming conditions are expected on Lake Michigan today and tonight, with the National Weather Service warning of strong rip currents and hazardous surf. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water as waves remain elevated along the Indiana shoreline.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, cooler and less humid air will settle into the region through next week, bringing a more comfortable stretch of late August weather. Today’s highs will reach the upper 70s to near 81 before falling into the upper 60s overnight.
Conditions will remain mostly sunny Thursday and Friday with highs near 80, though a weak disturbance could bring scattered showers to northwest Indiana late Saturday. The risk will be brief, with drier air expected to return Sunday and linger into midweek. Afternoon highs from Sunday through Wednesday will hold in the upper 60s to mid-70s, a notable cooldown from earlier this month.
Beachgoers are advised to avoid entering Lake Michigan until dangerous current alerts expire. Officials caution that rip currents can remain strong even after skies clear. Additional advisories may be issued if winds shift.
