Wilmington, NC – The region faces another day of extreme heat with dangerous heat indices climbing to 106°F to 108°F today, triggering a heat advisory for much of North and South Carolina. The advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., urging residents to take extra precautions.

According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures will range between 92°F and 98°F, but the real danger comes from the heat index. “Avoid prolonged outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours,” the service warns, as these conditions can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

In addition to the scorching heat, beachgoers in northeast South Carolina and southeast North Carolina should be cautious of moderate rip current risks, affecting all local beaches. Swimmers and surfers are advised to stay out of the water unless they are experienced and closely supervised.

For residents, it’s crucial to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day. If you must be outdoors, wear sunscreen and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

The oppressive heat is expected to persist into the evening, with low temperatures only dipping to the mid-70s to low 80s. The heat advisory will be reassessed at 8 p.m., with any further updates issued as needed.
