MARQUETTE, Mich. — Confidence is growing that a surge of Arctic air will spread across all of Michigan early next week, bringing some of the coldest conditions of the season and dangerously low wind chills, according to the National Weather Service in Marquette.

The most hazardous period is expected from Monday into Tuesday, when wind chills could plunge well below zero statewide. In parts of northern Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula, wind chills could fall to 25 degrees below zero or colder, posing a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone spending time outdoors.

In addition to the extreme cold, lake-effect snow is expected to develop in traditional snowbelt areas. Gusty winds accompanying the Arctic air mass may significantly reduce visibility at times, especially during heavier snow showers, leading to hazardous travel conditions.

Meteorologists urge residents to closely monitor the forecast as the cold wave approaches and to prepare now if they have travel or outdoor plans early next week. The combination of intense cold, wind, and snow could make conditions dangerous with little warning, particularly across northern and western portions of the state.
