Fitchburg, WI – A Madison man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after police found a handgun modified for automatic fire during a summer encounter in Fitchburg, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Authorities said Jevon Smith, 31, was sentenced on January 13, 2026, to 60 months in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Smith pleaded guilty in October 2025.

According to investigators, Fitchburg Police officers found Smith asleep in his car on June 15, 2025, at McKee Farms Park. A search uncovered a loaded Glock 29 handgun fitted with a machinegun conversion device, also known as a “switch,” which allows handguns to fire fully automatic.

Smith’s criminal history includes prior convictions for heroin trafficking, eluding an officer, and reckless endangerment. At sentencing, U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson noted that Smith was already on bond for a pending drug-trafficking case when the firearm offense occurred.

The case resulted from a joint investigation by the Fitchburg Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Prosecutors said the case aligns with the Department of Justice’s Operation Take Back America, a national initiative targeting violent offenders and illegal firearms.

Smith will serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
