Danbury, North Carolina — Hazardous travel conditions are expected to develop across portions of north-central North Carolina as a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect Wednesday evening, bringing a mix of light snow and ice into Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Caswell, Rockingham, and Stokes counties will see precipitation change from rain to light snow and freezing drizzle beginning around 6 p.m. Wednesday. Snow accumulations are expected to remain under one inch, but ice accretion around a light glaze is possible as temperatures fall rapidly below freezing overnight.

The advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST Thursday, with the most hazardous conditions expected overnight and during the Thursday morning commute. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and potentially dangerous due to refreezing moisture.

Impacted travel corridors include US-311 near Danbury, US-29 through Eden, NC-86 near Yanceyville, US-158, and NC-8. Even minimal snow and ice amounts can significantly impact travel in these areas, particularly where surfaces remain untreated.

Forecasters note that snow accumulation will be light and primarily limited to grassy and elevated surfaces, while freezing drizzle may create harder-to-detect icy patches. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances, increasing the risk of unexpected slick spots.

Commuters, students, and early-morning workers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation recommends checking the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting ncdot.gov before traveling.

Residents should continue monitoring updates from weather.gov/rnk, as small temperature changes could affect the extent of ice impacts overnight.
