Albany, NY – Strong to potentially damaging winds are expected across eastern New York and western New England today and tonight, with High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories remaining in effect across much of the region, according to the National Weather Service in Albany.
Forecasters say winds will increase rapidly this morning, becoming strong by midday and continuing into the overnight hours. A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the northern and central Taconics, the Berkshires, and Bennington County, Vermont, lasting until 1 a.m. Saturday. In these areas, wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are possible.
For the remainder of eastern New York and western New England, including the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Hudson Valley, and parts of western Massachusetts, a Wind Advisory is in effect through 1 a.m. Saturday, with widespread gusts of 40 to 50 mph expected.
According to the National Weather Service, the strongest winds may occur both this afternoon and again tonight, as a powerful system moves through and colder air surges into the region. These winds could lead to downed trees, fallen tree limbs, and power line damage, resulting in scattered power outages.
Travel may become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles on north-south roads and exposed highways. Gusty conditions could also reduce control on bridges and elevated roadways.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid parking near trees, and prepare for the possibility of power disruptions. Utility crews across the region are monitoring conditions closely.
