Dallas, TX — Dangerous Arctic cold is expected to impact Dallas this weekend, with wind chills dropping to near zero and prolonged sub-freezing temperatures prompting an Extreme Cold Watch.
According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning as an Arctic front moves into North Texas. The cold air is expected to arrive Friday, with the most hazardous conditions developing over the weekend.
Forecast data shows wind chills in the Dallas–Fort Worth area could fall into the single digits and near 0 degrees, especially overnight Saturday into Sunday and again Sunday night into Monday. Low temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing, increasing the risk of frozen pipes and cold-related emergencies.
The National Weather Service warned that prolonged exposure to extreme cold can be dangerous, particularly for people without adequate heating, those experiencing homelessness, and anyone spending extended time outdoors. Pets, plants, and plumbing are also at risk during the cold stretch.
Officials urged residents to finish preparations before Friday, including covering exterior faucets, locating water shut-off valves, insulating exposed pipes, and stocking emergency supplies. Residents are also advised to check heating systems and ensure space heaters are used safely.
Travel impacts may be limited compared to winter storms, but vehicle issues and cold-related breakdowns are possible during the coldest periods. Commuters and early-morning travelers should be prepared for very cold conditions.
The National Weather Service emphasized that while exact temperatures may still fluctuate, confidence is high that this will be one of the coldest stretches of the season for North Texas.
Dallas residents should continue monitoring forecast updates through the weekend, as the Extreme Cold Watch may be upgraded to a warning if confidence increases.
