Fargo, ND – Drivers across both North Dakota and South Dakota are being urged to prepare today as forecasters warn that fast-moving snow squalls could develop this season, bringing sudden whiteouts and dangerously slick roads just as early holiday travel begins to increase. The bursts may affect routes from Fargo to Sioux Falls, Bismarck, Rapid City, and along major corridors including I-29 and I-94.

Snow squalls are brief, usually lasting under an hour, but are considered among the most dangerous winter hazards. Instant whiteouts combined with flash freezing can rapidly turn highways slick, contributing to multi-vehicle pileups in past events across the Northern Plains. Officials stress that avoiding the road during a Snow Squall Warning is the safest option. As meteorologists often warn: “You don’t want to be on the road when it happens.”

If a squall hits while you’re driving, experts recommend slowing down gradually, activating hazard lights, and significantly widening following distance. Drivers should stay in their lane, avoid sudden braking, and never stop in a travel lane where visibility may drop to near zero. Safe pull-off areas—rest stops, exits, or parking lots—are the best places to wait out the burst.

Residents heading out for errands, commutes, or early holiday shopping should keep winter emergency kits stocked with blankets, chargers, water, scrapers, and traction materials like sand or cat litter. Outdoor items should be secured at home in case brief wind gusts accompany the squalls.

Forecasters will continue to monitor conditions across the Dakotas throughout the afternoon, with additional updates possible.
