Minneapolis, Minnesota – Severe thunderstorms are expected to rapidly strengthen between 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday near the eastern Dakotas and Minnesota border, with the potential for tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds as storms race east into the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, initial storm cells will likely form in northeast South Dakota and northwest Minnesota before merging into fast-moving clusters that pose a heightened risk for widespread damage. The primary threat window runs from early evening into the overnight hours, impacting cities including St. Cloud, Minneapolis, Rochester, and Eau Claire.
Localized flash flooding is possible due to torrential rainfall rates, particularly along the I-94 corridor and in urban areas with poor drainage. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid travel this evening unless necessary. Tornado warnings may be issued with little lead time due to the rapid storm development.
This is the first widespread severe event of late June and may affect weekend plans across Minnesota and neighboring states. Storm warnings remain in effect through late tonight, with additional updates expected from the NWS as conditions evolve.
