Indianapolis, IN – As Hoosiers jump into Cyber Monday deals today, Indiana officials are warning shoppers in Indianapolis to stay alert for a surge in Christmas-season scams. Cybersecurity experts say 2025 could bring one of the biggest waves of online fraud Indiana has ever experienced.
According to the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, scammers often use Cyber Monday to deploy fake retail websites, misleading coupon codes, and Christmas-themed phishing emails that appear to come from trusted brands. This year’s schemes are increasingly sophisticated, with criminals building realistic shopping pages and targeted ads designed to trick busy holiday shoppers.
One of the most common threats this season is copycat retailer websites. These fraudulent sites impersonate Amazon, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and even well-known Midwestern retailers. Shoppers are drawn in by flashy “Christmas Mega Deals” offering up to 80–90% off, but once payment information is entered, scammers disappear or send counterfeit products.
Indianapolis residents are also reporting a rise in package-delivery scams, where victims receive texts claiming a UPS, USPS, or FedEx shipment is delayed or requires address confirmation. Clicking the link can install malware or expose personal and banking information.
Cybersecurity officials recommend several steps to stay safe this holiday season:
• Shop using official retailer apps or verified websites
• Avoid clicking tracking links sent by text or unexpected email
• Check URLs for strange characters, misspellings, or unusual domain endings
• Use credit cards instead of debit cards for stronger fraud protections
• Be skeptical of deals that seem too cheap to be legitimate
With Christmas fast approaching, state officials hope Hoosier families enjoy the season—while staying vigilant online.
