Cumberland, ME – A Scarborough man died Saturday night after a Jeep crash on Interstate 295 in Cumberland that left the vehicle engulfed in flames.

According to Maine State Police, the crash happened on September 13, 2025, at about 9:30 p.m. after troopers attempted to stop a 2021 gray Jeep Wrangler on I-295 southbound near Mile Marker 16 in Yarmouth. The driver, identified as 34-year-old Jacob Brown of Scarborough, allegedly fled at a high rate of speed.

Troopers said they attempted to pursue the Jeep with emergency lights activated when the vehicle veered off the roadway at Mile Marker 13 southbound in Cumberland. The Jeep crashed into the woods and quickly caught fire.

Brown, who police said was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. Troopers pulled him away from the fire and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Preliminary investigation suggests both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, according to Maine State Police. Yarmouth Fire and Rescue and Southern Maine Towing assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
