According to the Crown Point Police Department, officers and firefighters responded around 2:24 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, to a reported structure fire at Sts. Peter and Paul Macedonian Orthodox Church, located at 9660 Broadway. When crews arrived, a small prayer chapel outside the main church was fully engulfed in flames and later extinguished by the Crown Point Fire Department.
Investigators determined the fire was caused by arson. The blaze is believed to have been set intentionally, officials said, and will be ruled incendiary following a joint investigation between police and fire personnel.
Through various leads, police identified the suspect as Tyler Cyr, 24, of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, who is facing two Level 4 felony counts of arson and two counts of criminal mischief, according to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
An active warrant has been issued for Cyr’s arrest. Police are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Crown Point investigators.
