Omaha, NE – A Red Flag Warning is in effect across Nebraska from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday due to strong winds and low humidity, creating dangerous fire conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley and North Platte, northwest winds will reach 20 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. Humidity levels will drop as low as 17% in southern areas, significantly increasing the risk of wildfires. The affected regions include eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, and fire-prone areas such as the Nebraska National Forest and Niobrara Valley.

Officials warn that any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly, making outdoor burning highly discouraged. Residents should take precautions to prevent accidental fires, such as avoiding activities that generate sparks and ensuring proper disposal of cigarette butts. Smoldering fires from previous days should be closely monitored.

Temperatures are expected to rise to around 65°F, further exacerbating dry conditions. No lightning is forecasted, but the combination of wind and dryness is enough to heighten fire risk.

Authorities urge residents to stay informed and follow local fire restrictions. Emergency personnel are on high alert, and those in fire-prone areas should have evacuation plans ready if necessary. Stay tuned for further updates from the National Weather Service.
