Crestwood, IL – A fire that broke out Wednesday evening in a three-story apartment building at 5700 W. 128th Street in Crestwood left two residents injured and displaced 19 people.
According to the Crestwood Fire Department, emergency crews responded to a Still Alarm of Fire at 4:49 p.m. The fire originated on the first floor and quickly spread through both stairwells, fueled by high winds and adverse weather conditions.
Crestwood Police officers were first on the scene and assisted a resident in rescuing another from the first-floor apartment where the fire began. A third-floor resident jumped to safety from a rear balcony before firefighters arrived.
The fire was upgraded to a 2-11 Alarm as departments from across the region responded. Crews deployed ground ladders and hose lines to combat the flames and conduct thorough searches on all three floors, despite the compromised stairwells.
One resident was transported to Palos Community Hospital in serious condition and later transferred to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood. Another resident was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition. Several others, including a police officer, were treated on scene for smoke inhalation.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal determined the fire was accidental. The building is uninhabitable, and displaced residents are receiving assistance.
