Grundy County, IL – Concerns over structural integrity have prompted the closure of Coal City Intermediate School’s gym after a significant crack was discovered in its north wall. Superintendent Christopher Spencer informed parents in a letter Tuesday afternoon, citing the wall crack as a serious concern that led to the immediate decision to secure the area and call in engineers for further inspection.
In response, several classrooms, the music room, and offices near the gym have been relocated to other parts of the school until the issue is fully assessed and repaired. As part of the safety measures, bike racks have been moved to a different location on campus, and sidewalks surrounding the north side of the building have been blocked off.
Although the gym remains closed, the school itself is still open, and students and staff will continue to use alternate entrances along Baim Street. Spencer expressed appreciation for the community’s patience and assured families that the district is working closely with engineers to determine the next steps to ensure safety.
The superintendent emphasized the importance of safety and promised to provide regular updates as more information becomes available. The district aims to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.
