Covington County, AL – A large-scale law enforcement response is underway Friday after an officer-involved shooting in the city of Opp, prompting an active manhunt and public safety warning.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Special Agents with the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation Friday, December 19, 2025, at the request of the Opp Police Department following a shooting involving officers.

ALEA said the incident occurred when Opp police officers responded to a call involving an individual reportedly armed with a gun near the intersection of Pond Drive and Barnes Street in Opp, located in Covington County. During the response, multiple officers, along with a State Trooper from ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division, encountered the suspect.

Authorities identified the suspect as Amos L. Matthews, 51, of Opp, who allegedly brandished a firearm and fired at officers, according to ALEA. Officers returned fire. Matthews then fled the scene into a nearby wooded area, triggering an active manhunt that remains ongoing.

ALEA officials emphasized that Matthews is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Residents are urged not to approach him under any circumstances. Anyone who sees Matthews or has information about his whereabouts is asked to immediately contact the Opp Police Department at 334-493-4511.

Multiple agencies are assisting in the search, including ALEA SBI Special Agents, ALEA Highway Patrol Troopers, ALEA’s Aviation Unit, officers with the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles, Opp Police Department officers, and deputies with the Covington County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said no further details are being released at this time as the investigation remains active. Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Covington County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Residents in and around Opp are advised to remain alert and report any suspicious activity as law enforcement continues search efforts.
