Chicago, IL – Aldi’s recent test of a pre-payment charge at select U.K. locations has raised concerns about whether similar fees could be introduced in the U.S.
According to multiple reports, Aldi tested a £10 ($12.29) pre-payment system at its Shop & Go store in Greenwich, London. Shoppers were required to either download Aldi’s app or tap a contactless card upon entry, with the charge later deducted from their final bill. Customers who spent less than the pre-paid amount or left without making a purchase experienced delays in getting their money refunded.
The system, which utilizes AI-powered cameras to track purchases in real-time, aims to create a checkout-free shopping experience. However, some customers expressed frustration, particularly over unexpected charges and refund delays. Aldi clarified that the pre-payment was a reservation, not an immediate charge, and that refunds could take several days depending on the bank.
As of now, Aldi has not announced any plans to implement this system in the U.S. However, with retailers increasingly experimenting with frictionless checkout technologies, similar payment models could be considered in the future.
