Corpus Christi, Texas – Residents across much of South Texas could wake up to freezing temperatures Sunday morning as a cold air surge settles over the region late Saturday night, raising concerns for plants, pets, and exposed plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service office in Corpus Christi, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday morning for a wide swath of inland South Texas. Overnight lows are expected to dip between 28 and 34 degrees, with wind chills falling into the lower 20s in some locations before sunrise.
The watch includes inland portions of Nueces, San Patricio, Kleberg, Refugio, Calhoun, and Victoria counties, along with Bee, Goliad, Jim Wells, Live Oak, McMullen, La Salle, Duval, and Webb counties. Cities such as Corpus Christi’s inland neighborhoods, Kingsville, Alice, Beeville, Victoria, Laredo, and Freer could see the coldest readings just before daybreak.
Sensitive vegetation is at risk, particularly in rural and agricultural areas, and unprotected outdoor pipes could sustain damage if temperatures drop below freezing for several hours. Residents are urged to bring pets indoors, cover plants, and insulate exposed plumbing ahead of the cold.
The National Weather Service notes that additional cold-related advisories could be issued if confidence increases in widespread sub-freezing temperatures. The Freeze Watch remains in effect through Sunday morning, and residents should monitor updates overnight and early Sunday.
