Corpus Christi, Texas – Record heat and gusty south winds up to 35 mph are elevating fire weather concerns across South Texas this Thursday, impacting travel along I-37 and US-77.

According to the National Weather Service Corpus Christi, temperatures Thursday are forecast to reach between 84 and 99 degrees across the region. Inland communities including Alice, Cotulla, Freer and Laredo could see highs in the mid to upper 90s, while coastal areas remain slightly cooler.

Forecasters said gusty southerly winds may reach up to 35 mph during the afternoon, creating elevated fire weather conditions, particularly across dry inland brush country. The combination of above-normal heat, low humidity and wind could allow fires to spread more quickly if ignited.

The agency noted that Thursday’s temperatures may approach or break daily records in parts of the region. Elevated fire weather conditions are expected to persist through the day before a weak front moves through Friday.

Friday highs are forecast between 77 and 90 degrees, followed by a warm weekend with highs ranging from 77 to 93 degrees Saturday and 78 to 93 degrees Sunday. Monday temperatures could climb back into the mid-90s.

Major roadways including Interstate 37, Interstate 35, US-281 and US-77 may experience crosswinds during peak afternoon travel hours, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and properly secure trailer chains to prevent sparks. Drivers, outdoor workers and students participating in afternoon activities should take precautions against heat exposure.

Officials advise monitoring updated forecasts for any fire weather statements or advisories.
