Corpus Christi, Texas – A spike in fire danger will grip South Texas by noon Sunday, with humidity dropping to 20% and wind gusts reaching 20 mph — conditions that can spark and spread brush fires near major corridors like I-37, US-77 and TX-44 within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, a Fire Danger Statement remains in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Sunday for the Coastal Plains and Eastern Brush Country, including Nueces, Kleberg, Jim Wells, Bee and Live Oak counties. North-northwest winds combined with critically dry fuels are driving the elevated risk.

Communities from Corpus Christi to Alice, Kingsville, Beeville and Freer face the greatest concern during peak heating hours. Open fields along SH-286 and rural stretches west of I-69E are especially vulnerable. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, keep vehicles off dry grass and properly discard cigarettes. Even small sparks from trailers or equipment can ignite roadside brush.

Beyond Sunday, the heat intensifies. High temperatures climb from the upper 80s on Washington’s Birthday to the mid and upper 90s by Thursday, increasing evaporation and drying vegetation further. Overnight lows will only fall into the upper 50s and 60s, offering little moisture recovery.

Drivers hauling equipment or towing trailers should secure chains and avoid dragging metal along pavement. Emergency managers warn additional advisories could be issued if winds strengthen or humidity drops further. Fire danger remains highest through 8 p.m. Sunday.
