Corpus Christi, Texas — A sharp cold front is expected to bring freezing temperatures and a potential icing risk to South Texas beginning Saturday night, raising concerns for early Sunday travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, very cold air will move into the region late Saturday, with overnight low temperatures falling into the 20s across much of the Coastal Bend. Wind chill values are expected to drop into the teens and lower 20s, especially during the early morning hours Sunday.
Forecasters say Sunday will remain cold, with high temperatures only reaching the upper 30s to lower 40s. Freezing temperatures are also possible again Monday and Tuesday mornings, extending the period of cold-related impacts.
In addition to the cold, meteorologists are monitoring the potential for a wintry mix Saturday night into early Sunday. While confidence remains low to medium, the best chance for a light glaze of ice is expected north of Corpus Christi, particularly across the Victoria Crossroads and areas farther inland. Any freezing rain could result in slick roadways, isolated power outages, and minor tree damage.
Roadways such as U.S. Highway 77, U.S. 181, and State Highway 44 could become hazardous if icing develops, especially on bridges and overpasses where temperatures cool fastest. Even a thin layer of ice can significantly increase crash risk.
The National Weather Service urges residents to prepare now by protecting pipes, bringing pets indoors, and planning for cold-sensitive travel. Drivers are advised to slow down, avoid sudden braking, and monitor road conditions before traveling late Saturday night or early Sunday.
For weekend travelers, early-shift workers, and commuters, the highest risk period appears to be late Saturday night through mid-morning Sunday, when freezing temperatures and possible ice could combine to create dangerous travel conditions.
