Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois is heading into a stretch of cooler weather, with daytime highs holding in the upper 60s to upper 70s through Monday. Skies will carry a hazy look today due to wildfire smoke, which could also lead to degraded air quality in spots.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, overnight lows will dip into the mid to upper 50s tonight, then cool further into the mid-40s to lower 50s from Friday night through Monday night. A small chance of rain arrives Friday afternoon and evening south of Interstate 72, with the best odds for light showers extending into Friday night.

Communities from Decatur to Effingham may see passing showers before skies clear again Saturday. The weekend itself looks mainly dry and comfortable, with plenty of sunshine Saturday through Monday. Highs will sit near 70 degrees Saturday and Sunday, warming into the mid-70s by Monday.

Drivers should be alert to reduced visibility today from smoky skies, and residents sensitive to air quality should limit extended outdoor activity. Otherwise, conditions will be favorable for outdoor plans after Friday’s brief rain chance.

Dry weather is expected to hold into early next week, with the next system likely arriving midweek.
