Charlevoix, Mich. – Life-threatening rip currents and 5-foot waves are making Lake Michigan beaches in Charlevoix and Emmet counties extremely dangerous today. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water, with the National Weather Service warning that conditions could turn deadly.
According to the NWS office in Gaylord, waves between 3 and 5 feet are expected through Thursday evening, paired with strong currents that make rescues nearly impossible. The agency advises beachgoers to avoid entering the lake and to stay clear of piers, where waves often surge higher.
On land, Northern Michigan remains locked in a cool, unsettled weather pattern. Highs will struggle to reach the low 60s under partly cloudy skies, with scattered showers mainly across the eastern Upper Peninsula and the tip of the Mitt. Winds will strengthen tonight into Friday, bringing more widespread showers and the chance of thunderstorms.
Travelers should prepare for brisk conditions on exposed roadways and reduced visibility during heavier showers. Those heading outdoors should dress in layers, secure loose items, and avoid unnecessary water activity.
The National Weather Service says swim risks remain high into tonight, with cooler, showery weather persisting through the weekend. Conditions should improve early next week.
