Cookeville, TN — A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Cookeville and Putnam County from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday, with the potential for heavy snow and ice creating dangerous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, snow and/or ice may begin Friday night, continuing through the weekend. Forecast outlooks show a 40–70% chance of at least 6 inches of snow north of I-40, with a 30–50% chance of 3 inches or more in surrounding areas. Ice accumulation is also possible, which could increase the risk of power outages and fallen trees.

Officials warn that hazardous road conditions are likely if snow or ice accumulates, especially overnight and during early morning hours. Travel could become extremely dangerous, and emergency response times may be impacted. Power outages could last for an extended period if ice builds up on trees and power lines.

Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris urged residents to prepare ahead of time by charging electronic devices, ensuring generators are operational, and having flashlights, batteries, food, and water on hand. Residents with medical needs that rely on electricity are encouraged to plan for backup power, including oxygen supplies if applicable.

The watch remains in effect through Sunday evening, indicating a prolonged period of potential impacts. As confidence increases, the Winter Storm Watch may be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel, bring pets indoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Those who must travel should plan for delays and changing road conditions.

Cookeville residents should closely monitor forecast updates through Friday and the weekend, as snow totals, ice potential, and timing may change.
