Chicago, IL – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Cook County, Illinois, and neighboring Lake and Porter Counties in northwest Indiana, with heavy lake effect snow expected to develop late Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago.

Forecasters warn that localized snow rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, with total accumulations over 6 inches possible in parts of the Chicago metro area. Northerly wind gusts topping 35 mph may create near-whiteout conditions, particularly along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

According to the NWS, untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses could quickly become slick and hazardous, especially during the Monday morning commute. Travelers are advised to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for rapidly changing visibility and road conditions.

In Lake and Porter Counties, Indiana, the Winter Storm Watch will extend through Monday afternoon, where lake effect snow bands may linger longer and lead to additional accumulations.

“Lake effect snow can vary greatly over short distances,” the weather service noted. “One neighborhood could see intense snowfall while another remains dry.”

Residents are encouraged to check local updates, avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, and allow extra time if driving near the lakefront or on elevated roadways.
