Palos Park, IL – Police are warning Illinois residents to stay alert when using the “Tap to Pay” feature at credit card machines and gas pumps, after reports of a new scam targeting drivers.
According to the Palos Park Police Department, scammers have been placing fraudulent stickers over legitimate card readers. These fake “Tap to Pay” decals are designed to capture a customer’s card information when they attempt to make a purchase. While no incidents have yet been reported in Palos Park, authorities say the scam has surfaced in other areas and could spread locally.
Police recommend drivers take extra precautions before paying at the pump. Customers should inspect card readers carefully, watch for any stickers or attachments that seem out of place, and immediately report suspicious findings to the business or law enforcement. If a device looks unusual, officials advise using another pump or switching to a different payment method.
Authorities stress that vigilance is key in preventing fraud. “Stay alert and protect your financial information,” the department said in its advisory.
