Cook County, IL – Three Chicago men were arrested and charged after allegedly breaking into a railcar in a pre-dawn joint operation targeting rail cargo thefts, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The arrests occurred around 4:35 a.m. on Oct. 29, near East 95th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago.

According to authorities, Norfolk Southern Railroad police alerted the Sheriff’s Police Community Safety Team after a drone spotted three individuals breaking into a cargo container on a freight train. When officers arrived, the suspects fled but were quickly located in nearby residential areas.

Officials identified the suspects as Kendrick Durr, 28, Allen Powell, 35, and Jaylin Thomas, 24 — all from Chicago. Officers reportedly recovered several boxes of subwoofers taken from the cargo container near the scene.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony burglary charges against all three men, who also face misdemeanor trespassing counts on railroad property. Durr and Thomas were released after court appearances on Oct. 30. Powell, who was on probation for an unrelated weapon conviction, was ordered held for violating probation.

Authorities remind the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
