Chicago, IL – An Illinois State Police trooper is recovering after a stolen vehicle slammed into a marked squad car during a traffic stop early Sunday morning in Chicago, leaving the patrol vehicle heavily damaged and sending two people to the hospital.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened at approximately 12:18 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of 75th Street and Yates Avenue on the city’s South Side. The trooper had stopped at a traffic light when a black Chrysler sedan traveling westbound on 75th Street was struck by a northbound BMW on Yates Avenue.

Authorities say the BMW then continued into the intersection and hit the front of the state police squad car. Both civilian vehicles and the squad car sustained significant damage, with the patrol vehicle rendered undrivable and later towed from the scene.

The BMW driver, identified as a 29-year-old Chicago man, allegedly fled the scene on foot but was quickly taken into custody by Chicago Police Department officers, with assistance from state police. Despite the severity of the crash, the trooper was able to assist with the arrest.

Investigators later determined the BMW had been reported stolen. Police also say the suspect was illegally carrying a loaded firearm at the time of his arrest.

The trooper and the suspect were both transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries, according to ISP.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has approved multiple charges, including aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle (Class 1 felony), several felony weapons charges, forgery-related registration charges, leaving the scene of a crash, and traffic offenses. The suspect is currently being held at the Cook County Jail pending an initial court appearance.
