Cook County, IL – A 28-year-old man is behind bars after Cook County Sheriff’s Deputies discovered two firearms, including a stolen assault-style rifle, during a court-ordered eviction in Chicago.

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were enforcing an eviction order around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24, in the 7100 block of South Langley Avenue. Inside the residence, deputies found a loaded pistol modified with a switch to fire fully automatic, located near the front door. In a bedroom, they also recovered an AK-47 style rifle that had been reported stolen from South Bend, Indiana.

The suspect, identified as Kentrell Leggitt, was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities noted he was on parole and already the subject of two active warrants. The case was referred to the Sheriff’s Police Gun Team, and later that day, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Investigators also processed Leggitt on the outstanding warrants. He appeared at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Wednesday, September 25, where a judge ordered him held in custody.

The Sheriff’s Office reminded the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
