Chicago, IL – Two Chicago men are facing multiple charges after allegedly breaking into a railcar and tossing packages from a moving train on the city’s South Side.

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, the incident allegedly occurred around 8 p.m. Sunday near the 6100 block of South Stewart Avenue. Authorities say Sheriff’s Police Community Safety Team officers were alerted by Norfolk Southern Railroad Police that two individuals had allegedly burglarized a shipping container on a train. A railroad-operated drone reportedly captured the suspects allegedly removing packages and throwing them to the ground below.

Officials said the train had already left the area by the time officers arrived, but both suspects were allegedly taken into custody nearby. Investigators reported recovering mesh bags filled with packages, along with opened shipping boxes and a pair of bolt cutters believed to have been used in the alleged burglary.

The suspects, identified as 18-year-old Jashawn Bonds and 33-year-old James Lott, were both charged with burglary and trespassing on railroad property. Authorities said the charges stem from the alleged events on Sunday.

According to officials, both men were initially released on Monday with orders to appear in court at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse. However, law enforcement said both individuals remain in custody at the Cook County Jail. Bonds is reportedly being held on a warrant from Allen County, Indiana, for burglary, while Lott allegedly had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a separate Cook County burglary charge and was detained again.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities remind the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
