Arlington Heights, IL – The Arlington Heights Police Department announced Friday it will join a statewide effort targeting impaired drivers this holiday season. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign begins Thursday, December 12, and continues through Sunday, January 5, 2026, covering Christmas and New Year’s travel periods.

According to police, the enforcement initiative—funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation—aims to reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes, which increase significantly during the holidays. Officers across Illinois will step up late-night and weekend patrols, focusing on impaired and distracted driving.

“Law enforcement across Illinois will show zero tolerance for alcohol and drug-impaired driving to help ensure a happy and safe holiday season,” the department stated in its release.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows nearly half of all fatal crashes between midnight and 3 a.m. involve an intoxicated driver during the Christmas and New Year’s period. Police urge drivers to plan ahead by using a designated driver, taxi, or ride-share service if celebrating.

Authorities also remind residents to call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver and to ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts.

For more information, residents can contact Sergeant Tim Scanlan at 847-368-5300.
