Palos Township, IL – A 34-year-old Palos Park man has been charged with attempted murder after two seniors were stabbed during an incident Wednesday morning in unincorporated Palos Township, authorities said.

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24, to the 12000 block of South Newport Drive for a reported stabbing. When officers arrived, they found a 72-year-old woman with wounds to her face and a 77-year-old man suffering from multiple stab injuries. Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their current conditions were not released.

Sheriff’s officials said the offender, identified by authorities as Matthew Sokolowski, was taken into custody at the scene and later transported to Palos Hospital for treatment of a hand injury. According to investigators, Sokolowski allegedly stabbed both victims during the incident, though a possible motive has not been disclosed.

Following interviews and evidence review, detectives presented the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors approved two felony counts of attempted murder against Sokolowski on Thursday, Nov. 25.

Authorities said Sokolowski was ordered into Cook County Jail custody after his first court appearance on Friday, Nov. 26, at the Bridgeview Courthouse. Additional court dates have not yet been released.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office reminded the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
