Grand Junction, Colo. – Temperatures will climb across western Colorado today as high pressure strengthens over the region, bringing mostly sunny skies and a return to drier conditions for much of the area. Light haze and smoke will be present, and winds will turn westerly at 10 to 15 mph, with occasional gusts nearing 25 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, weak monsoonal moisture will still trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, mainly over the San Juan Mountains and along the western edge of the Continental Divide, especially south of Vail Pass. Storms could produce brief downpours, lightning, and gusty winds.

Travelers heading through mountain passes this afternoon should watch for rapidly changing conditions, particularly in higher elevations. Outdoor recreation in the San Juans should be planned with the potential for storms in mind, including having shelter nearby and avoiding exposed ridges during lightning activity.

Dry, warm weather is expected to dominate the Grand Junction area through midweek, but storm chances will persist in southern mountain zones.
