Hartford, Conn. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect across much of Connecticut until 8 p.m. Saturday, with damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning all possible as storms sweep the state.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, Tolland, and Windham counties. Forecasters say the strongest storms could bring gusts over 60 mph, leading to downed trees and power outages in both urban and rural areas.
In Hartford and New Haven, scattered cells are expected through the afternoon, with the risk of torrential downpours reducing visibility on I-91, I-95, and I-84. Emergency management officials are urging drivers to delay travel if possible, and to avoid flooded roadways.
Western Connecticut, including Danbury and Waterbury, could see the earliest rounds of storms by mid-afternoon, while eastern towns such as Willimantic and Putnam may experience the most severe weather closer to evening. Outdoor events, sports practices, and late-day commuters are most at risk for disruptions.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices ahead of potential outages, and move indoors at the first sign of thunder. More warnings could be issued if storm conditions intensify.
