Bridgeport, Conn. – Connecticut residents in Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven, and Northern Middlesex counties may face unhealthy air conditions Wednesday as ground-level ozone concentrations climb during the day. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has issued an Air Quality Action Day, in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

According to DEEP, ozone levels could approach or exceed the federal health standard, particularly during the afternoon when temperatures rise and winds remain light. Sensitive groups — including children, older adults, and those with respiratory issues — are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity.

Officials recommend postponing lawn mowing, using public transportation instead of driving, and conserving energy during peak hours to help reduce pollution. Residents may also want to keep windows closed in the afternoon to limit indoor exposure.

The Air Quality Action Day is part of a broader summer trend, as stagnant air and heat combine to trap pollutants near the ground. Additional alerts may be issued if conditions persist into late week.
