Hartford, CT – Connecticut drivers are being warned to prepare for flash freeze conditions developing Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, as temperatures fall sharply following a day of rain and melting snow. The National Weather Service says leftover moisture on roads could refreeze within hours, forming black ice along major corridors like I-84, I-91, and Route 9.
A flash freeze occurs when temperatures plunge below freezing quickly, turning wet pavement into slick, invisible ice. Even after precipitation ends, these conditions can catch drivers off guard — particularly on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways.
Experts warn that vehicles traveling 35 mph on icy roads may require up to 600 feet to stop, compared to 60–100 feet on dry surfaces. Motorists are urged to slow down, maintain greater following distance, and avoid sudden braking or cruise control overnight.
“Roads may look wet but can be completely frozen,” the NWS said in a Tuesday night statement. “Expect black ice for the Wednesday morning commute.”
Drivers across Hartford, New Haven, and Fairfield Counties should use extra caution and plan for slower travel until late morning when conditions begin improving.
