Hartford, Connecticut – Bitter cold and strong winds are expected to overspread Connecticut beginning Saturday, Feb. 8, creating several days of hazardous winter conditions that could affect travel, utilities, and outdoor safety statewide.

According to the National Weather Service, a surge of Arctic air will move into southern New England from Feb. 8 through Tuesday, Feb. 11, with sustained winds driving wind chill values into subzero territory at times. The most dangerous conditions are expected overnight and during early morning hours, with cold and wind persisting through much of the day.

Across central Connecticut, including Hartford and surrounding communities, wind chills are expected to dip below zero, making even brief periods outdoors dangerous without proper protection. Along the shoreline, including New Haven and New London, strong winds could create additional stress on power infrastructure, while inland areas may see icy patches develop on untreated roads during the coldest nights. Higher elevations in northwestern Connecticut could experience even lower wind chills.

State officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear layered, wind-blocking clothing, and check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat. Drivers should prepare for hard-starting vehicles and use caution on untreated roads.

The cold pattern is expected to ease after Feb. 11, though additional wind chill advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
