Hartford, Connecticut – A powerful Arctic outbreak is set to bring dangerously cold and potentially life-threatening conditions across Connecticut and Rhode Island beginning Friday, as strong winds and plunging temperatures grip southern New England through the weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts could reach 45 to 50 mph at times, driving wind chills well below zero across both states, especially Friday night through Sunday morning. Inland Connecticut is expected to see the coldest conditions, but even coastal Rhode Island communities will experience bitter wind chills capable of causing frostbite on exposed skin in a short period of time.

Snow showers and brief snow squalls are possible as Arctic air surges into the region, particularly Friday night into Saturday. While widespread heavy snow is not anticipated, sudden bursts of snow combined with strong winds could rapidly reduce visibility and create slick conditions on highways, bridges, and overpasses, including I-84, I-95, and Route 2.

The prolonged cold raises serious concerns for infrastructure and daily life. Residents are urged to wrap exposed pipes, open cabinet doors, and allow faucets to drip to keep water lines from freezing. Strong winds could also lead to isolated power outages, making it important to charge phones and devices ahead of time and prepare backup heat options if available.

Officials strongly recommend limiting outdoor exposure, dressing in multiple layers, and covering all exposed skin. Pets should be brought indoors, and vulnerable neighbors should be checked on regularly.

The most dangerous conditions are expected through the weekend, with only gradual improvement possible by Monday. Additional cold weather advisories or warnings may be issued as the Arctic air remains firmly entrenched across Connecticut and Rhode Island.
