Boston, Massachusetts – Scorching heat and oppressive humidity will grip much of southern New England through Thursday evening, as heat index values soar to 100 degrees in cities from Boston and Worcester to Providence and Hartford.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for all of eastern and central Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and Rhode Island until 7 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters warn that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could lead to heat illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups and those without access to air conditioning.

The advisory covers major cities including Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Hartford, and Providence, impacting communities along I-95, I-90, and other key corridors. Local agencies urge residents to limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of fluids, and seek air-conditioned spaces during the hottest hours of the day. Officials also recommend checking on elderly relatives and neighbors, as well as never leaving children or pets in vehicles—even briefly.

This is the region’s most significant heat event of July, rivaling similar stretches from past summers. Area cooling centers are open, and schools with summer programs may adjust schedules or move activities indoors.

The heat threat is expected to persist until 7 p.m. Thursday, with another update from the National Weather Service anticipated as temperatures moderate. Additional advisories may be issued if the heat lingers into the weekend.
