Manchester, CT – On this day, 51 years ago, a powerful tornado tore through Manchester, Vernon, and Talcottville, Connecticut. The F-2 tornado left a path of destruction, damaging homes and causing widespread power outages. The tornado touched down at around 11:00 a.m. on September 6, 1973.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornado carved a 3.3-mile path with winds strong enough to rip roofs off homes. Walls and garages collapsed under the storm’s force. Numerous trees were uprooted, and debris scattered across the affected areas. Power outages were extensive, although fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported.

While not as destructive as the 1979 Windsor Locks tornado, the storm caused $2.5 million in property damage, a significant blow to the region. It stands as a reminder of the unpredictable power of nature and the importance of preparedness. Connecticut residents continue to remember this event as a pivotal moment in the state’s weather history.
