New York, NY – A fast-moving storm system is expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy rain across the New York metropolitan area late Sunday night into early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service New York.
The agency reports that rainfall chances will peak between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday, with up to 95% likelihood of precipitation across most of the region, including New York City, Long Island, and parts of Connecticut.
According to forecasters, isolated thunderstorms may occur overnight, bringing a low but notable risk of strong to damaging wind gusts and possibly a brief tornado. South to southeast winds could reach 35 to 45 mph, particularly along coastal areas such as Montauk, Islip, and Hempstead, where scattered tree damage and power line disruptions are possible.
A minor urban and poor drainage flood threat exists, especially in low-lying or heavily paved areas. Commuters should anticipate a wet and windy Monday morning with slower travel times and possible ponding on roads.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and holiday decorations ahead of the storm.
