New York, NY – Residents across southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and southeast New York are being urged to prepare for extreme heat conditions Friday as the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with heat index values forecasted to reach between 100 and 105 degrees. The affected areas include Northern and Southern Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties in Connecticut; Western Passaic in New Jersey; and Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties in New York.

Officials warn that the combination of high temperatures and humidity may lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for seniors, those with chronic health conditions, and residents without air conditioning. The heat index is expected to remain at dangerous levels throughout the day, potentially causing hazardous conditions in homes and workplaces.

According to the advisory, residents are encouraged to use air conditioning where available, seek out cooling centers or other air-conditioned spaces if their homes are not adequately cooled, and check regularly on vulnerable neighbors, friends, and family. The National Weather Service also advises outdoor workers to take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments, and to watch for signs of heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends that employers adjust work schedules and provide additional water and cooling breaks for outdoor laborers. If someone is overcome by heat, they should be moved immediately to a cooler location and medical assistance should be sought by calling 911.

Temperatures are expected to return to more seasonal levels following the advisory period. Residents are urged to stay informed through local media and official channels for the latest weather updates.
