Boston, MA – Severe storms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across western and central Massachusetts Friday afternoon and evening, with the highest threat for damaging winds and hail between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe thunderstorms has been issued for Springfield, Worcester, and Amherst. These storms may produce wind gusts over 50 mph, small hail, and periods of heavy rain that could cause localized flash flooding, especially along I-91 and the Mass Pike corridor.

The greatest risk zone stretches from Hartford, Connecticut north through Putnam and Hebron into Massachusetts, including Hampden, Hampshire, and Worcester counties. In these areas, scattered severe storms may lead to downed trees, power outages, and dangerous driving conditions. Boston, Lowell, and the North Shore are under a lower “Marginal Risk,” but could still see isolated storms and heavy downpours late in the day.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. Keep phones charged and be prepared for sudden changes in weather, especially if you have afternoon or evening plans outdoors.

Severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued on short notice through Friday evening. Stay tuned for updated alerts as storms approach from the northwest.
