Boston, MA – Commuters across southern New England should brace for flooded roads and travel delays this morning as 2 to 4 inches of rain threaten low-lying areas from Connecticut to Rhode Island.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Flood Watch is in effect until 2 p.m. Thursday for much of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and all of Rhode Island. Rainfall rates could overwhelm storm drains during the morning hours, particularly in urban areas like Boston, Providence, and Worcester.
Cities including Lowell, Fall River, Brockton, and New Bedford may see flash flooding on major roadways such as I-95, I-195, and Route 1. In Rhode Island, flooding is possible in Warwick, Coventry, and Newport, especially in areas with poor drainage. River and creek levels could rise rapidly, leading to dangerous conditions near waterways.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, clear storm drains if safe to do so, and monitor for updated alerts. If a Flood Warning is issued, immediate action may be needed in vulnerable zones.
More showers may linger into the evening, but the heaviest rain is expected to taper off by late afternoon. Flood Watches remain in effect until 2 p.m., with additional warnings possible throughout the day.
