New York, NY – Heavy rain will sweep across the New York City metro and Lower Hudson Valley beginning late Friday night, threatening localized flooding and slick roads from Waterbury to Newark through early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service, showers will develop after 11 p.m. Friday and persist through 2 a.m. Sunday, with rainfall totals likely to reach 1.27 inches in Waterbury, 1.23 inches in Danbury, and more than 1 inch in New Haven, Cold Spring, and Bridgeport. New York City, Newark, and White Plains are projected to see between 0.75 and 0.88 inches, while Islip and JFK may receive up to 0.75 inches.
Periods of heavy rain could reduce visibility and cause ponding on major roadways like I-95, I-287, and the Hutchinson River Parkway. Isolated thunderstorms, especially Saturday, may bring gusty winds and brief downpours, increasing the risk for hazardous travel. Commuters should allow extra time, avoid flooded streets, and check real-time transit alerts. Residents are urged to secure outdoor belongings and clear storm drains where safe.
The heaviest rain is expected Saturday afternoon and evening. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall rates intensify or storms become severe. Stay tuned to local alerts as conditions evolve.
